09:00 - 16:00 13th November 2023 – 21st December 2023
More Information10th November – 21st December 2023
The Gateway Gallery is proud to present ‘Hiding’ – a highly thought-provoking exhibition of artwork by local emerging artist, Grace Currie. In 2010, aged 17, Grace’s life hung by a thread after a serious traffic accident resulted in severe brain injury leaving her with interrelating disabilities and a neurodivergent view of the world.
Her work often uses these challenges to confront viewers, to reflect her resistance to the reductive label ‘disabled’ or the disorientating sense of fractured self 24/7 care engenders. She is inspired by artists who express inner feelings through portraiture. Grace’s work uses the powerful tension that childlike form in painting can create when themes are adult, sometimes sexualised.
‘Hiding’ is set to be a unique and fascinating exhibition giving insights into Grace’s life through portraiture, mixed-media, ceramics and 3D work from past performance pieces.
The exhibition runs from 10th November until 21st December 2023 at the Gateway Gallery, Gateway Centre, Chester Street, Shrewsbury SY1 1NB.

Shropshire Bookfest's 'Sound of Reading' Conference
09:00 15th November 2023
at University Centre Shrewsbury
ShrewsburyShropshire Bookfest's 'Sound of Reading' Conference
09:00 - 15:30 15th November 2023
More InformationThe Current Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho Headlines “The Sound of Reading” Conference to launch Shropshire Bookfest's Book Award 2024:
The importance of developing the spoken word around reading has been receiving much attention recently. This year’s conference draws together advice from authors, practitioners and academics on the important social aspects of reading and other ways in which the printed word is brought alive for the young reader. What might a performance approach to text look like? And why could this be important for all readers, including the less able or less confident? Why do we have to talk about what we are reading? And how do we get children to talk about books? This conference, titled The Sound of Reading, is being headlined by the current Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho who, with fellow workshop leaders, will equip teachers with toolkits and inspiration on how to bring children together to respond to texts through voice, drama, poetry and performance poetry. The only conference of its kind in Shropshire for primary school teachers with a panel of nationally renowned speakers, the day will focus on:
• Inspiring, informing and empowering teaching staff.
• How to immerse yourself and your pupils in Book Award 2024.
• Working as a community and to share ideas and experiences.

BridgnorthBasset-Toronto Based Folk Duo from Arts Alive
19:30 - 22:00 16th November 2023
Quatt Village HallMore InformationToronto-based folk duo, Basset, are full of timeless heart. Acoustic songwriters Sam Clark and Yasmine Shelton will take you through city streets in the hours before the world has woken, or to a corrugated steel home north of the treeline.
Basset bring a deep love of the natural world to their gorgeously meditative and assured debut album, In The Clay (September 2022). Produced by Joshua Van Tassel (Sarah Slean, David Myles), In The Clay explore themes of life in change, Shelton and Clark’s travels around Northern Ontario, the Canadian and American prairies, their lives in Toronto, and the many characters who have crossed their paths. With comparisons to The Milk Carton Kids, Hozier, and Bon Iver, their inventiveness shines on fiddle and intricate harmonies, with Shelton and Clark’s voices wrapping around each other like twin flames in a warm fire.

He embarked on a performing career with rock bands including The Work before diversifying his skills and experience with musicians from other traditions, and increasingly linking music with story and other art forms.

TelfordPale Fire Music presents Matt Deighton with guest Rowan Lawson
19:30 - 23:00 2nd December 2023
Firefly OakengatesMore Information2021 saw the re-emergence of British folk’s most enigmatic lost son. You may recognize Matt Deighton from his time fronting Acid Jazz heroes Mother Earth; you may remember him as Paul Weller’s guitarist in the late 90’s, or Noel Gallagher’s recommendation for who should replace him when he quit the European tour in 2000. Or maybe you don’t. For almost two decades, the man they keep calling the natural successor to Nick Drake, Davey Graham and John Martyn has been himself more of a rumour – a murmur among musicians, songwriters and diehard music lovers who proudly display his rare vinyl releases like trophies. The list of articles in the press and online has continued unabated, forever asking the same question: Where is Matt Deighton? As the Huffington Post discovered in their recent piece ‘The Resurrection of Matt Deighton’: He’s back. He’s been back a couple of times, and you missed him.
Tom Cox, who reviewed Wake Up The Moths for the Observer Music Monthly recently remarked in the sleeve notes for the vinyl reissue that his only regret when reviewing the album was that he felt his ‘measly four out of five-star rating did it a disservice’. Add to that the four stars from Q and Mojo for his collaboration with Chris Sheehan ‘The Bench Connection’ in 2007 and you start to get the picture. That’s to say nothing of collaborations with Chris Difford, Dr John and Mighty Baby, Matt is indeed a force of nature.
“It is impossible to imagine fans of Nick Drake and John Martyn not falling in love…” Sunday Times
"One of this country’s best kept secrets… a sense of timelessness enshrouds Deighton… embrace the return of his unique talent” – The Huffington Post
” A mellow folk-soul gem, shamefully overlooked… there’s clearly a sharp, undervalued talent at work.” – –Mojo 4/5
Rowan Lawson
Rowan Lawson has, for the past two years, been singing and performing original material at venues across the country, his music has been described as ‘Indie-tinged with thoughtful lyrics’, and his style has been likened to Bob Dylan. His music has received air play and praise from BBC Introducing Shropshire, BBC Introducing West Midlands, and his song ‘December Eyes’ earned the accolade of ‘Song of the Week’ on Rick Witter’s, lead singer of Shed 7, radio show. Rowan is passionate about his music "There is something magical about pulling a song out of the air, then performing it to an audience and seeing people dance and enjoy themselves, feel something.”
