Much WenlockShropshire Drama Company extends tour of self-penned mystery based on a selection of Shropshire’s supernatural folktales
19:00 - 21:30 31st October 2024
More InformationFollowing a successful tour earlier this year, Shropshire Drama Company (SDC) will take its self-penned production, inspired by local folklore from around the county, on the road again this coming autumn.
Written by local playwright and SDC member Michele Rowland-Jones and coinciding with Halloween, Supernatural Shropshire is set to visit the following venues:
Saturday 26 October – Oscars at The Assembly Rooms, Ludlow
Thursday 31 October – The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock
Friday 01 November – Montford Parish Hall, near Shrewsbury.Performed by six actors Supernatural Shropshire is set in a small village pub, where a woman’s quiet drink is disturbed by the arrival of a stranger. With the aid of a cast of storytellers the stranger spends the evening recounting several Shropshire folktales, including stories of ghosts, evil witches and even the devil himself but who is this mysterious stranger and why is it so important that she believes in the stories he tells?
Michele Rowland-Jones said: “Shropshire has a wealth of fascinating folktales and I hope that audiences will enjoy hearing them, as much as I have enjoyed researching them and weaving them into my play.”
Performances begin at 7.30pm and tickets are £10. Details of how to purchase tickets can be found on the SDC website: https://shropshiredramacompany.co.uk.

“A glorious and deliciously naughty homage to Cole Porter” TORONTO STAR"Cole Porter was the top - the pinnacle of wit and sophistication. From the 1910s through the 50s from Yale pep rallies to the Broadway triumphs of "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me Kate", he delighted audiences with a glittering torrent of songs -including "Night and Day", "Love for Sale", "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "Just One Of Those Things" . The bright surfaces of these gems - their catchy melodies and ingenious lyrics - made them instant pop hits. Their more subtle qualities and their musical and emotional depth have made them lasting standards, among the greatest glories of the American Songbook" WILLIAM McBRIEN, COLE PORTER BIOGRAPHY

A Joke by Dan Freeman
12th November 2024
at Theatre Severn
ShrewsburyA Joke by Dan Freeman
- 13:30 12th November 2024
More InformationAn Englishman, An Irishman and a Scotsman go to… Shrewsbury!
It sounds like the start of a joke. It is! A Joke is a hilarious and thoughtful hit play from multi-award-winning writer Dan Freeman (Dr Who: Death Comes to Time; The Minister of Chance; Mundo Jazz) coming to the Theatre Severn this November.A Joke broke records in its first outing at the Edinburgh Fringe where it was an instant hit, with Doctor Who and The Hobbit star Sylvester McCoy and Star Trek favourite Robert Picardo returning for a second sell-out run at the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms.
It tells the story of three strangers who appear in the middle of nowhere with no memory of who they are. However, they soon discover that one is an Englishman, one is an Irishman, and the third is… well, Scottish-ish. As they try to work out the mystery of their existence, the suspicion begins to dawn that they may be characters in a joke.
The play has been praised for its pondering on the meaning of existence, as well as a stream of brilliant one-liners. The British Theatre Guide described it as “The Gold Standard” and “a don’t miss”; the Edinburgh Evening News as “a comic masterclass”; and The Fringe Review “a privilege to witness”.
A guaranteed night of entertainment, the play is also a thoughtful meditation on the meaning of life, and a warm tribute to comedy in all its forms. Now, with an all-new cast, the play embarks on a national tour.
A Joke can be seen at Theatre Severn for one night only on Tuesday November 12th.

Mark Thomas: Gaffa Tapes
20:00 13th November 2024
at Theatre Severn
ShrewsburyMark Thomas: Gaffa Tapes
20:00 - 22:00 13th November 2024
More InformationFollowing a recent step towards theatre in his last few shows, Mark Thomas is back to his finest stand-up form and anti-Tory sentiment in Gaffa Tapes as takes his tour to Shrewsbury!
Mark’s now famous mix of standup, theatre, journalism and the odd bout of performance art has made him one of our oldest surviving alternative comics. Often referred to as the ‘godfather of political comedy’ (amidst many other things), Mark has been performing comedy for nearly 40 years.
If you don’t know what Mark does, ask your parents. In his time, he has won 8 awards for performing, 3 for human rights work… and 1 he invented for himself. He has made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product and 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, written 5 books and 4 playscripts, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and was commissioned to write a show for the Royal Opera House. He has forced a politician to resign, changed laws on tax and protest, become the Guinness Book of Records world-record holder for number of protests in 24 hours, taken the police to court three times and won (the fourth is in the pipeline), walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank (that’s 724km), and generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset (shall we say) the right people.

LudlowCarole King's Tapestry: An Evening in Laurel Canyon
19:00 - 21:00 14th November 2024
More InformationThis event sends us back to California in the 1960s and
1970s as the hippies took over the Sunset Strip. With the house prices too
costly in the centre of town, a creative hub emerged in Laurel Canyon; an area
overlooking Los Angeles in the Hollywood Hills. Just some of those who took
advantage of this cheaper living space included members of The Byrds and The
Doors as well as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Carole King…In the first half of this concert, you will hear music from
the artists listed above as well as many others by the Laurel Canyon residents
during this time.In the second half, the band will perform in its entirety
Carole King's masterpiece Tapestry. Of all the albums released at this time in
the Laurel Canyon community, Tapestry, arguably, sums up this counterculture
best. It is a statement of togetherness, love in all its forms, feminism, and
endless hope for the future. -

More Information“Quietly, inexorably, The Breath have become one of the … most exciting folk acts… Only Stories… an acoustic recording that unfolds like a paper flower”
The Financial Times ★★★★★The Breath is Manchester-based guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly. They met on the city’s gig circuit in the late noughties. An unlikely pairing though it was, he an acclaimed guitar whiz, ex long-time member of The Cinematic Orchestra and a softly spoken Manchester urbanite, she a folk singer with a larger-than-life personality and a powerful voice to match. Their connection was immediate; they formed The Breath in 2016, a singer-songwriter duo to present their contemporary take on alt-folk.

Present our 100th productionMurder in Play
A comedy by Simon Brett
Boris Smolensky’s budget repertory production of “Murder At Priorswell Manor” is looking decidedly shaky. The cast are more interested in their egos than the play and life imitates art when a member of the cast is murdered on stage. Simon Brett’s hilarious text, a worthy companion to his Charles Paris theatrical thriller novels, ruthlessly satirizes the politics of the inept company and the numerous red herrings keep the audience guessing until the final moments of the play. - 2222nd November 2024
