Pale Fire Music presents Sweetpool with Judas Johnson
19:30 8th March 2025
atPale Fire Music presents Sweetpool with Judas Johnson
19:30 - 23:30 8th March 2025
More InformationSWEETPOOL create a thrilling, intense melting pot of psychedelic punk, flamenco and space noises - but this isn’t just noise for the sake of noise - they love a proper tune.
Think Can, Hawkwind, Pigbros, even The Groundhogs, hurled together with a dose of post punk. Songs happily fly off into almost trance like repetition, powered by a pulsating rhythm section alongside the drone of what they call the ‘ E pedal ’ and augmented by bubbling synths. This is all mixed up with the three minute angular pop songs - genres are made to be ignored. Preconceptions are made to be shattered.
The debut album ‘TRIPLE EARTH STAR’ was released at the end of January 2024 with a special sold out show at the Tower of Song - the whole thing was recorded for the live album, SPACE BAR.
Following a year of outrageous gigs and festivals, now work begins of the next album-possibly called 'Head of Snakes'.Judas Johnson could be described as the elder statesmen of the Shropshire music scene. Formed as a three-piece in 2007, this year begins the eighteenth together for Mark Evans - drums, Chris Boon - Bass and Mark Johnson - guitar and vocals. With two albums, some memorable gigs and hefty back catalogue of original songs, ‘The Judes’ are one of the country’s most enduring bands. A clutch of new songs notes a departure from the soundscapes of The Comfort of Honest Thinking, as they strip back the sound to the core elements of guitar, bass and drums. It’s a return to The Firefly and rare chance to see the band make some noise…

atWilfred Owen Festival - The Fiddle
19:00 - 20:30 20th March 2025
More InformationA talk by Author Natalie Cumming
A true story, tracing a precious violin across landscapes devastated by war and terror, to safety and restoration in 21st century Britain.
Abraham and his family flee the Bolsheviks, from St. Petersburg to Odessa and safety in the UK. Abraham’s skill on the violin earns them food and lodgings, as they struggle through the freezing Russian winter. The violin passes to Rosa, who is Abraham’s daughter, violinist with a famous German orchestra. Arrested by the Nazis on Kristellnacht 1938 she is sent to Mauthausen Concentration Camp, and then to Auschwitz, where her musical talent sees her forced to join the Women’s Orchestra and saves her life. She spends the last 5 months of the war in Belsen, before testifying at the Nuremberg Trials, exposing the horrors of the Nazi death camps. Rosa’s brother Israel, inherits the violin. A celebrated musician, he joins ENSA during the war, entertaining the troops. Post war, he investigates the Nazis trying to escape trial. He forms several popular bands, well-known throughout the '60s & '70s. Finally, the violin comes to his daughter Natalie, who has written her family’s extraordinary story, lest the world should ever forget global events, against which the journey of this beautiful instrument is told. In 2018 the violin was restored on the TV's Repair Shop programme.

Rhydycroesau Village HallOswestry, Shropshire SY10 7JEMore InformationDeeply rooted in the old fiddle tradition, Emma & Ellika play tunes and improvised second voices with power and variety. New compositions by both Emma and Ellika stand side by side with traditional material from Bingsjö and Orsa in the county of Dalarna. Fiddles and re-tuned violas; voices with strongly personal expressions. Blue notes, gravity, lift, improvisation and dance are present in this world where the heritage from master musicians such as Nils Agenmark, Gössa Anders Andersson, Solo Cissokho and K. Shivakumar form a red thread in the rich experiences of both musicians. A story informed not only by Swedish fiddle music but also by music from other cultures and genres.
The meeting between Emma Reid and Ellika Frisell began in 2000, first in a teacher-student relationship at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and then as a collaboration between two musicians with a shared background and source of inspiration. Two generations where the creative expression is seamlessly welded together. Over the years Emma & Ellika have performed at
numerous concert and dance stages in Sweden and the UK.Showcasing their debut album Vader (weather) don’t miss this chance to see them live

atWilfred Owen Festival - Classical Music Concert
19:30 - 22:00 23rd March 2025
More InformationA Concert for Peace & Reconciliation directed by Christopher Symons and featuring the Wilfred Owen String Quartet of instruments.
The music has been specially chosen to reflect the Festival's general theme of Peace and Reconciliation, including Edward Elgar's glorious Piano Quintet of 1918, in which his deep longing for just such peace (as well as some of the anguish which preceded it) is so poignantly expressed. A similar desire can be felt in “The Lark Ascending” by Vaughan Williams (an ambulance driver on the Somme in WW1) as he turns to nature and its consoling beauty. Other short works in the same poignant mood will include the theme music from the film Schindlers List which will be played on another very special instrument - the “Auschwitz Violin”- as written about in the book “The Fiddle” by Natalie Cumming.

WhitchurchSeeds of Potential - Intuitive Art Workshop
10:30 - 13:30 5th April 2025
More InformationTap into your creative power and create meaningful art in alignment with the natural rhythms of the seasons and the Wheel of the Year.
In this intuitive art workshop, you will create a piece of art exploring a theme that embraces the energies of Spring Equinox. The theme for this 3-hour Intuitive Mixed Media Art workshop is ‘The Seeds of Potential’.
At Spring Equinox, the pure potential of the rising life force is fully awakened from its winters sleep. You can see this rising vital force starting to burst into life all around you in nature. You also start to feel the potential in life calling you forward. Your possibilities and inspirations can start to make themselves clearer. The fire of your creative potential in life gets stoked.During this workshop we will tap into the rising creative energies through exploring the energy of spring and engaging the creative process as a meditative reflection process. Laying down paint and mixed media intuitively and rest into enjoying, moving, and playing with your paint. The session starts with a small-guided meditation practice – so you can approach the creative process from a place of stillness and rest. You then move into working on building layers of flow and curiosity with images, quotes, textures, and acrylic paint as you connect to the Seeds of Potential that spring is gifting to you.
Using your fingers, brushes, colour, creating and dissolving form you will learn how to express creatively without using the mind to judge what the outcome will be or what to do next. There is guidance, technique and prompts throughout the session to keep the thread of the theme ‘The Seeds of Potential’ evolving as you create. This approach allows a dialogue with your intuitive nature to open as you relax into the creative process. A communication opens that informs and inspires the piece being created and enables you to bring forward in your art piece a message of The Seeds of Potential that are opening within you. Making each participant’s piece unique and full of meaning and reflection.
Not only will you leave the session with a beautiful piece of artwork that is meaningful to you but also a depth of creative nourishment and enhanced well-being.
NO PRIOR ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.
ALL CREATIVE ABILITIES WELCOME.
