Paul Wranitsky studied at the Theology Faculty of the University of Olomouc, Czech Republic, and later in Vienna. From 1790, he conducted both royal Viennese theatre orchestras. He was highly respected by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven; the latter two preferred him as conductor of their new works. This is a rare opportunity to hear his arrangements of the first two of the first set of the ‘Apponyi’ Quartets for a wider group of players.
Haydn's Quartet nicknamed The Joke is the second of the six so-called ‘Russian Quartets’ of 1781.
