OswestryAN EVENING WITH ANGELA CLUTTON – SEASONING
19:30 - 20:30 6th June 2024
Booka BookshopMore InformationLove to cook? Calling all foodies!
Join us for an evening with award-winning food writer Angela Clutton as she talks about her new book Seasoning and helps us launch our new Booka Cafe with food tastings and wine.
Bring the rhythms of the seasons into your kitchen with this timeless guide to cooking and celebrating produce, all year round.
Seasoning spans the four seasons of the year, with insights into over 50 vegetables and fruits. Award-winning food writer Angela Clutton explores their seasonality, offering tips on shopping and storing, countless ways to use them, flavour partners and how to minimise waste. Plus 75 fresh, modern and approachable recipes show how to make the best of the season’s produce.
This book illustrates how embracing seasonality is about understanding the cycles of the land and the climate – even, or especially, as it changes – and how they have the ability to make things taste the best possible versions of themselves. Winter frosts bring out the sugars of sprouts and parsnips; sunshine doesn’t just make summer’s tomatoes sweet but deep with flavour too. It’s about sustainability, and also about the joy to be had in not having everything, always, but in looking forward to something, and then missing it when it’s gone. Vegetables and fruits take centre stage, with profiles of meat and fish – whose seasonality is often forgotten – woven through.
Discover how the seasons move and how what we want to eat and cook moves with them. Seasoning is an endlessly useful companion that will inspire confident, intuitive cooking, time and time again.
“A brilliant and beautiful book that everyone who loves to cook should own.” STANLEY TUCCI
We look forward to welcoming Angela back to Booka to celebrate the publication of Seasoning. There will be food tastings from recipes in the book and wine to mark the launch of our new Booka Cafe. Do join us!
Tickets: £15 (Admits One, includes tastings and wine. £10 redeemable against a signed copy of Seasoning)

Firelight Trio
19:30 7th June 2024
at Hermon Arts
OswestryFirelight Trio
19:30 - 22:30 7th June 2024
More InformationExperience the vibrant heart of Europe with Firelight Trio - where every note weaves a tapestry of tradition and innovation, and every performance is a journey through the continent’s soulful melodies and spirited rhythms.
Firelight Trio is a mighty new group featuring Fatea instrumentalist of the year 2023 Gavin Marwick (fiddle), accordionist Phil Alexander (Moishe’s Bagel), and Ruth Morris (Outlander – HBO) on the beautiful Swedish Nyckelharpa. They play European music that is evocative, inventive, and endlessly exciting. Ruth’s resonant nyckelharpa is matched by Gavin’s powerhouse fiddle, all backed up by Phil’s groovily inventive accordion and piano, in a rich tapestry of lively Swedish polskas and Scottish reels, lilting French waltzes, toe-tapping klezmer, dazzling original tunes and more.
‘A veritable roots music supergroup’ – RnR magazine
‘Top-calibre trio with grace, energy, and playfulness’ - Folk Radio UK
‘Achingly beautiful’ – Fatea
‘Deeply expressive, impressively virtuosic and cheekily sardonic, all in perfect measure’ Songlines ****
‘Simply splendid… three musical giants’ – RnR magazine
‘Absolutely superb, thrilling and mesmerizing performance! A truly memorable concert and 100% enjoyable from toddlers to seniors.’ -Laura Pyrrö, cultural producer of Espa Stage, Helsinki.
They had a fantastic live review from St George's, Bristol, which you can read here: https://www.fatea-records.co.uk/magazine/live/3CW.php/
The album is on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/3BG0uHyMWZg6DWnpbAughi
Or on Bandcamp: https://firelighttrio.bandcamp.com/album/firelight-trio
‘It's very hard not to think about Europe and be desperately furious about loss when listening to this incredible album by Firelight Trio. It's stuffed with Latvian marches, French Chapelloise, Balkan Polskas, Ukrainian klezmer tunes and German jigs. At every turn it is joyous, deliriously uplifting, wildly inventive, it is breathtakingly beautiful, gently contemplative, wonderfully thoughtful. It is, in short, everything that makes European music so great.’ – Gavin McNamara

OswestryRick Wilson's Drum Circle (Workshop)
15:00 - 17:00 15th June 2024
More InformationDelighted to welcome back to Hermon the ever popular Rick Wilson.
Come try your hand at percussion, literally.
Born and educated in London, Rick started messing around with drums in his mid-teens whilst recovering from the fall-out of inadequate secondary music teaching. Listening to a wide selection of musics developed a can-do attitude that grew quickly after meeting other like-minded souls. He embarked on a performing career with rock bands including The Work before diversifying his skills and experience with musicians from other traditions, and increasingly linking music with story and other art forms.
Initially self-taught on kit, he later studied Chenda temple drumming with Shankaran Marar and V.D.Nair in Kerala, south India; Berber rhythms in the Atlas mountains of Morocco and Brazilian carnival music with Sheda Baba in London.
As accompanist for education and performance dance projects, he has worked with Shobana Jeyasingh, T. Oonikrishnan and P.Jayachandran.He has also been a tutor for WOMAD and Glyndebourne and spent many years working throughout the UK with Common Lore Storytellers and Musicians, as both performer and teacher.
In 1999 Rick completed a degree (2:1) in Music Studies at SOAS in London. With regular collaborator Helen East, he has visited schools at all levels, teachers’ centres, theatres, conferences and festivals in the UK and worked in Australia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South America, Singapore and Portugal, often under the aegis of the British Council.
