Village Hall, Rhydycroesau, Oswestry
8pm, £15 (child £8)Methera is a string quartet with roots firmly planted in English traditional music. Its four members combine a deep knowledge of traditional music with a wide range of other influences and expertise and a deep sense of musical interaction. Newly composed pieces sit alongside timeless traditional material; their music is both sophisticated and earthy, groundbreaking and familiar, enchanting and thrilling. Their national tours, BBC radio broadcasts and collaborations have helped them blaze a trail through the uncharted territory that lies between folk and chamber music. Their two fiddlers are Emma Reid, who is no stranger to Rhydycroesau – she’s played here in several combinations over the years – and Grace Smith, whose many other collaborations include a duo with Sam Sweeney. They are joined by cellist Lucy Elkiss, who studied under jazz violinist Omar Puente, and Miranda Rutter on viola, who often collaborates with the likes of Chris Wood, Rob Harbron and, again, Sam Sweeney.
The legendary Alistair Anderson called their music a 'joyous cauldron of sound’, while accordionist Karen Tweed described them as ‘a marvel of musicality’. You can hear clips on their website http://methera.co.uk. This will be a rare chance to see them on a short UK autumn tour.As usual, we strongly recommend advance booking as our concerts do sometimes sell out.
Tickets can be reserved by phoning Eirene on 01948 710218 or John on 01691 791403, or if you’re near Llansilin you can pick them up at Eirian’s organic shop Siop y Rhosydd.
No bar at Rhydycroesau so please bring your own drink and drinking vessel.

Shropshire Stamp and Postcard Fair
10:00 3rd October 2026
at Halls Auction Centre
ShrewsburyShropshire Stamp and Postcard Fair
10:00 - 16:00 3rd October 2026

Halls Auction CentreMore InformationLong-forgotten stamp collections are set to be valued at an upcoming Shropshire event, which also aims to attract existing and budding philatelists.
The Shropshire Philatelic Society is hosting its annual Stamp and Postcard Fair on Saturday 3rd October at Halls Auction Centre in Battlefield, Shrewsbury. Last year was among its most successful, attracting established collectors of stamps, postal history, and postcards, and those interested in starting the hobby from across the Midlands and beyond.
Also invited are those who may have a collection in their home gathering dust, perhaps handed down from a relative and now in long-term storage.
Society president Nick Webb said: “We know there are plenty of attics and cupboards out there containing stamp collections which may include valuable items. Often, these albums are handed down from generation to generation, but it’s easy to forget about them over time.
“Not only could finding them out and bringing them to the Fair prove useful for their owners, but it also means we may uncover rare or unusual stamps which have unknowingly been hidden away for many years – or even decades.
“The day is also the ideal opportunity for those considering stamp collecting as a hobby to come along and find out more. The great thing about stamps is that you can build a collection based around almost any theme you can think of – so people already interested in anything from art to astronomy, or science to sports, can build albums based on their existing passions.”
Open from 10am to 4pm, there will be 12 dealers on hand to meet attendees, alongside Halls valuation specialist Andy Neal.
Shropshire Philatelic Society was founded in 1947 and meets twice a month, with external speakers, an annual competition, and displays of members’ own material – which includes postcards and postal stationery as well as stamps.
For more information about the society or the fair, visit www.facebook.com/shropshirephilatelicsociety or contact Nick Webb on 07780 996241 or email ncvwebb@gmail.com. - 44th October 2026

When acclaimed finger-style guitarist and songwriter Amit was diagnosed with a degenerative nerve condition in 2018, the prognosis was devastating: just two more years of playing guitar before his hands would no longer cooperate. For a musician whose artistry was deeply rooted in the strings beneath his fingertips, it felt like an ending. From the landmark television series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet to Spender and then Crocodile Shoes — which spawned multi-platinum albums and chart-topping singles — Jimmy Nail has left an indelible mark on British popular culture. His career spans hit records, television series, major film roles including Evita and Still Crazy, and leading performances on both Broadway and London’s West End.
