The sessions organised by Wem Civic Society will include:
(1) Wem Churches & Chapels, a guided walk led by David Smith. The walk starts from the Town Hall at 9.30am and lasts for one hour. The image shown - The Stage Door - once Wem's Apotolic Church. Places should be booked with the society. Places must be booked for this event - please contact the society.
(2) Wem in WWII, an illustrated talk by Oliver Richardson. This will start at 11.15am and last for approximately one hour. Illustrations will be shown on the cinema screen. Seating provided.
A new Wem Civic Society booklet on this topic will be available for purchase following the talk.
(3) Opening the Gates of Time: Making the Soulton Castle Site Accessible, a drop in session with Tim Ashton, from 9am. Soulton Hall has been seen many archæological digs. The most recent in the mound of Soulton Castle, a medieval fortification. This discovery has ignited a new project: transforming Soulton Castle into a vibrant heritage amenity accessible to everyone.
(4) Sales of vintage Shropshire postcards, books, and ephemera from David Benson, who is a highly respected supplier of such material. There will also be greetings cards and society publications for sale.
(5) Displays covering:
The White Horse, including an update on the project. Copies of the WCS survey into Wemians’ views on the future use of the building will be there. The society will be collecting memories of the White Horse – please bring your stories.
1930s/1940s – Food & Fashion.
There is no entrance fee but donations are welcomed to support the work of the society.
