Newport Music Club celebrate their 50th Anniversary Season with Concert Royal

It was the idea of a former Headmaster of the Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School, Mr. David Taylor to form a Music Club for Newport, run by the people of the Town which would be self financing. And so this is how it has been for the last fifty years. From the beginning the organisation of the concerts has been the work of a committee of volunteers made up of music lovers who wished to bring chamber music ensembles, trios, duos and soloists, both instrumentalists and singers to perform for the paying public.

The original concerts were hosted in the Big School room at the Grammar School, but over the years concerts have also been in local churches and halls. Recently most of the events have been at Cosy Hall, the Newport community building on Water Lane, in which the Club often makes use of the grand piano. The Club has hosted many young artists at the beginning of their careers such as the pianist Mark Viner as well as more established groups such as The York Waits, The Fujitas from Japan and pianist Jack Gibbons. All performers have been professionals, many based in our region but also from all corners of the UK and from abroad.

All are welcome to come, old and young, local and not so local. We hope you will give Newport Music Club a try and attend our first Concert of 2025 on Sunday January 26th at 3.00pm at Cosy Hall, Newport TF10 7LD with an afternoon of ‘drawing room music’ featuring ‘Concert Royal’. ‘Concert Royal’ was founded by Peter Harrison and John Treherne, then joined by ’cellist Rachel Gray, their aim is to recreate the musical sound world of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This will be a unique opportunity to travel back to the late eighteenth century to enjoy historically informed performances on instruments whose voices were first heard more than 250 years ago.
Tickets are £15 adult/£5 child (cash or cheque). A season ticket is only £75 and gains you all six concerts for the price of 5, so why not save money and invest in the whole season.
