An Evening with Kate Atkinson – Death at the Sign of the Rook
19:00 16th September 2024
at The Holroyd Community Theatre
OswestryAn Evening with Kate Atkinson – Death at the Sign of the Rook
19:00 - 20:00 16th September 2024
More InformationJoin us for an evening with bestselling author Kate Atkinson as she returns with a brand new Jackson Brodie novel, Death at the Sign of the Rook
The stage is set. Marooned overnight by a snowstorm in a grand country house are a cast of characters and a setting that even Agatha Christie might recognize – a vicar, an Army major, a Dowager, a sleuth and his sidekick – except that the sleuth is Jackson Brodie, and the ‘sidekick’ is DC Reggie Chase.
The crumbling house – Burton Makepeace and its chatelaine the Dowager Lady Milton – suffered the loss of their last remaining painting of any value, a Turner, some years ago. The housekeeper, Sophie, who disappeared the same night, is suspected of stealing it.
Jackson, a reluctant hostage to the snowstorm, has been investigating the theft of another painting: The Woman with a Weasel, a portrait, taken from the house of an elderly widow, on the morning she died. The suspect this time is the widow’s carer, Melanie. Is this a coincidence or is there a connection? And what secrets does the Woman with a Weasel hold? The puzzle is Jackson’s to solve. And let’s not forget that a convicted murderer is on the run on the moors around Burton Makepeace.
All the while, in a bid to make money, Burton Makepeace is determined to keep hosting a shambolic Murder Mystery that acts as a backdrop while the real drama is being played out in the house.
A brilliantly plotted, supremely entertaining, and utterly compulsive tour de force from a great writer at the height of her powers.
Tickets: £12 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Death at the Sign of The Rook) or £22 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Death at the Sign of The Rook)

OswestryAn Evening with Donna Ashworth
19:00 - 20:00 17th September 2024
Booka BookshopMore InformationJoin us for an evening with Sunday Times Bestselling author and poet, Donna Ashworth, as she talks about her new book ‘Growing Brave’.
In this powerful new collection of wisdom and poetry, Donna Ashworth helps us to find strength and courage on the days we feel lost, to pick ourselves up when times are hard, to soothe fear and self-doubt when we are in their grip, and to let in more life and love as we brave our challenges.
Every day we are bombarded by thoughts, feelings and information that make us feel anxious and afraid. We worry we don’t measure up, we are scared of failure and we find it hard to be ourselves. We also feel powerless watching the world getting messier. Fear is a limiting factor for many of us and if we don’t challenge it we can find ourselves keeping out more of the good stuff in life than the bad.
With poems such as ‘One Day You’ll See’, ‘Growing in Moonlight’, ‘The Comparing’ and ‘Always There’, bestselling author Donna Ashworth helps us to see that whatever we are facing, no matter how small or afraid we feel, we make the biggest difference in this world and to our own happiness when we are brave enough to show up as ourselves.

Bestselling author, best known for his Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series, Peter James, will be signing copies of his new book One of us is Dead at Booka on Thursday 19th September 1.30pm – 2.30pm.
Creator of Her Majesty Queen Camilla’s favourite fictional detective.
23 million books sold.
Roy Grace is about to find out just how dangerous a dead man can be. One Of Us Is Dead is the latest race-against-time instalment of the award-winning Grace series by Peter James, now a major ITV show starring John Simm.
Who is next?
When James Taylor arrives late for a funeral, he has to stand at the back of the small church. But, as the service progresses, Taylor notices a man six rows in front of him. At first he thinks he must be mistaken, but the more he looks at the man, the more convinced Taylor becomes that this is his old schoolfriend Rufus Rorke.
Except it couldn’t be him, could it? Because two years ago Taylor attended Rufus Rorke’s funeral. He even delivered Rufus’s eulogy.
On the other side of Brighton, at Police HQ, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace has been alerted to a number of suspicious deaths that he can’t get out of his mind. But how are they linked? And could they possibly be connected to Rufus Rorke?
Although the Roy Grace novels can be read in any order, One Of Us Is Dead is the twentieth title in the bestselling series.

Illuminated Manuscript Course

atIlluminated Manuscript Course
13:00 - 13:00 27th September 2024 – 29th September 2024
More InformationWeekend Course in the Prior’s Hall of Wenlock Abbey, Much Wenlock.
With Barbara Bodziony – Following the popularity of Barbara’s calligraphy course at Wenlock Abbey, we are pleased to offer her course in illuminated manuscript. You can either be a complete beginner or have some experience of manuscript illumination.
The course runs from 1:00pm on Friday 27th September to 1:00pm on Sunday 29th September and includes all the materials you will need, as well as tea/coffee and a light lunch on Saturday. You will need to find your own accommodation.
In the ancient setting of the Great Hall at Wenlock Abbey, learn how to create an illuminated manuscript. Also, discover something of the history of this ancient house, once famous for its illuminated manuscripts, as well as the recent restoration programme carried out under the ownership of artist Louis de Wet.Barbara Bodziony writes:
“Although we welcome experienced participants, this course is tailored especially for beginners in medieval illumination. No experience is required in either drawing or painting. Participants will learn, step-by-step, the craft of a medieval miniaturist, studying and creating the painted decoration of the manuscript. We will learn the recipe for medieval adhesive and how to apply different pigments. The final work will be a copy of an initial from the 12th Century bible from Cluny Abbey, with some words or a short phrase – the more advanced can create a whole page.
We will be studying the beautiful initials from this giant bible, written in Latin, containing 68 ornamented initials. This bible was most likely ordered by Abbot Odilon, the fifth Benedictine Abbot of Cluny at the beginning of the 12th century.”
Wenlock Abbey is a daughter house of Cluny, and you will be studying in the Great Hall of this Cluniac Priory, in the footsteps of medieval monks.
Course cost £230
ABOUT THE COURSE LEADER:Barbara Bodziony is an honours graduate from the European Institute of Illumination and Manuscripts in Angers, France, and runs the School of Calligraphy and Illumination in Krakow, Poland. She works extensively on projects for museums and delivers calligraphy and illuminated manuscript workshops throughout Europe, in particular, at the Benedictine Priory of Tyniec, near Krakow. This will be her second year of courses at Wenlock Abbey – she returns by popular demand! With her knowledge of monastic scriptoria, as well as her skill in the art itself, Wenlock Abbey is proud to have her as a most fitting tutor for its illuminated manuscript course in the Prior’s Hall.
THE COURSE ITSELF:There will be no more than 10 participants on this course, in order to ensure that everyone gets individual attention.
At 1:00pm on Friday, meet outside the front gates of Wenlock Abbey in the Bullring (there is no parking inside the grounds of Wenlock Abbey, but plenty of carparks within walking distance in the town). Here, you will be welcomed and led up to the front of the house to meet your hostess, Gabrielle de Wet, who will give you a brief description of the outside of the house before taking you inside and introducing you to your course leader, Barbara Bodziony. Barbara will outline the programme for the weekend, before she and Gabrielle take you on a brief tour of the house, ending in the Great Hall, where your course will take place. The day will end at 6:00pm.
On Saturday, the course will resume at 9:30am in the Great Hall of Wenlock Abbey and run until 5:30pm with breaks for tea and coffee, and a light soup-and-sandwich lunch in the Lesser Hall, and you are welcome to walk around the grounds if weather permits.
On Sunday, the course will resume in the Great Hall at 9:30am and end at 1:00pm, and you will go home with a piece of work that you have created.
Please note that lunch is not provided on Friday or Sunday, but, you may wish to explore the town of Much Wenlock, which offers many places of culinary delights, within a very short walking distance.

An Evening with Amy Jeffs – Saints: A New Legendary of Heroes, Humans and Magic
19:30 30th September 2024
at The Holroyd Community Theatre
OswestryAn Evening with Amy Jeffs – Saints: A New Legendary of Heroes, Humans and Magic
19:30 - 20:30 30th September 2024
More InformationJoin us for an evening with Amy Jeffs, the Sunday Times bestselling author of Storyland and Wild as she talks about her new book Saints, delving deep into the history of Britain’s past through the tales that captured the medieval imagination.
Numerous saints were held to have lived, breathed and performed miracles across Britain, from only decades after Christ’s death, up to the eve of the Reformation, with all of its consequent destruction.
In medieval narratives these saints are given nature’s blessing: a salmon finds Cadog’s handbook, the Thames parts for Alban, geese fill the sky to converse with Werbaugh. Moreover they fit the medieval view of British history at large. St Cadog and King Arthur are contemporaries; St Mungo meets Merlin in the woods; St Alban is implicated in the Roman persecution of Christians. And while there was no single history accepted across its islands and diverse populations, these stories do enable us to reconstruct a long, obsolete view on Britain’s deepest past.
Through passages of narrative, deeply researched explanation and beautifully illustrated by the author with thirty paper-cutouts, Saints retells stories that enjoyed centuries of popular appeal among medieval Christians but were suppressed when their shrines were destroyed. These stories embraced the darkness of their heroes: sinister saints who sacrificed their followers and women who communed with geese, saints whose decapitated heads spoke to wolves.
Tickets: £12 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Saints) or £30 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Saints)
